Communications Voice and Data Engineer

Increasing demands for force agility, shared intelligence, better collaboration and interoperability require new and refreshed talent for our Information Communications Technology department based in Northallerton. North Yorkshire Police are seeking a dynamic, skilled Communications Voice and Data Engineer to join their Information Communications Technology department based in Northallerton.


Your main responsibility in the role would be to keep current and future systems portfolio, functional on a day to day basis by ensuring that these systems operate in the most efficient way and that user requirements are met within the limitations of the technology and resource available to the force.

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage, take decisions and record all faults on the force Voice & Data systems and liaise with contractors as necessary to keep systems and equipment outage to a minimum.
  • To ensure that all Voice & Data equipment in the force is in a serviceable condition or that unserviceable equipment is receiving attention, either in-house or through contractors.
  • Providing relevant technical expertise to the force and maintain proficiency as the technology evolves and advances.
  • Design, implement and manage firewalls. Ensure these meet PSNP Accreditation.
  • Design, implement and manage Wi-Fi infrastructure.
  • To give supervision, coaching and instruction, as required, to any temporary staff.

The person

  • Excellent problem solver, analytical with strong verbal/written communications skills and experience in a technical customer focused environment.
  • As a Technician/Engineer, you will have previous experience working within complex multi-platform environments. You will be able to evidence the ability to manage multiple priorities without supervision including implementation projects and providing technical guidance to ensure delivery.
  • Experience of working with PABX/ IP Telephony systems in a medium to large organisation, with a thorough understanding of telecoms principles, standards and technologies is required.
  •  CCNA Accreditation or an ITL Foundation Certificate in Service Management or working towards is desirable but not essential. 
  • *Please not the post holder will be required to work outside normal working hours and participate in an on call system to provide 24 hour cover
