Armed Response Vehicle Officers and National Firearms Instructors

Are you a current Armed Response Vehicle Officer, A Firearms Instructor, or an Armed Response Vehicle Officer, with aspirations to become a Firearms Instructor? If so this is your opportunity to pursue this career in North Yorkshire Police. Applications are now being invited for these roles in the rank of Constable.

The location of the posting for Armed Response Vehicle Officer is based at either Tadcaster Police Station or Thirsk Police Station. The Instructor posts being based at Tadcaster Police Station, but working across the Yorkshire and the Humber Region (YatH).

In order to apply for either role you need to be trained to the national standard for an ARV Officer, which means only Home Office Police Constables can apply.

If you are an existing Firearms Instructor you need to be an experienced Firearms Officer and qualified Firearms Instructor (having attended the National Firearms Instructors Course). If successful you will be responsible for the writing and delivery of ARV tactics to YatH students and firearms commanders, as well as training to be a Firearms Tactical Advisor. As a Tactical Advisor you will provide tactical firearms advice to firearms commanders on a rota basis. If you are not already a Tactical Advisor, we will arrange training at a College of Policing licensed centre.

If you are a current Armed Response Vehicle Officer, but have aspirations in becoming a Firearms Instructor we invite your application, which will be assessed at interview stage. The vision is to train a number of team based trainers, to rotate into the Firearms Training Department, with a view to permanent postings as part of our succession planning over the next couple of years.

 Essential Criteria for existing Firearms Instructors

  • Successfully completed a National Police Firearms Instructors Course and currently involved in the delivery of firearms training
  • An experienced Authorised Firearms Officer trained to ARV level
  • Level 3 qualification in Education and Training (or equivalent)
  • Can demonstrate knowledge of policies and guidelines relating to the police use of firearms
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills
  • Understands record keeping and Data Protection requirements
  • Understands the principles of effective Health & Safety management

  Desirable Skills

  • Level 4 Qualification in Education and Training (or equivalent)
  • National Firearms Tactical Advisors Course
  • Specialist Firearms Skill (Tactical Rifle, CBRN, Close Protection, Working at Heights)
  • Operational Firearms Commander

In addition, at the time of application submission candidates must be able to confirm;

  • They are not subject to formal action plans for sickness/complaints/discipline or poor performance;
  • A Satisfactory rating, or above, was achieved on the last reporting year PDR
  • All mandatory training is up to date. 

All applicants must be willing to undertake and commit to the following requirements, in order for their application to be considered and progressed throughout the recruitment process;

  • Completion of detailed vetting and PSD checks
  • Attendance and successful completion of a role specific selection assessment procedure.
  • To be physically and medically able to pass all assessments, including nationally agreed eyesight, hearing and fitness standards.
